Learning something new boosts mental health

When we are children, this seems so evident. Learning something new boosts our mental health. It builds confidence and is fun. Many of us lose this sense of wonder as we age. But what if you knew that learning new things actually promotes mental health and wellness?

Learning something new boosts confidence and self-esteem

Research shows that acquiring a new skill or beginning a new hobby can boost our wellbeing….as well as just being fun. In fact, 80% of those participants in the study reported an increase in self-esteem and self confidence. These feelings are believed to be a result of an experience of “taking back control.” The research explains that “…boost in self-esteem and creativity is a wonderful reminder that one is able to trust in their ability to bring about change in their lives – it’s hugely empowering.”

A meditative state is often used when learning something new

Learning something new has a profound effect on our mind. When we are focused a new hobby or pastime, we often enter a “flow state” where time seems to stand still. This “flow state” actually releases dopamine (a feel good chemical) in our brains. The result is an ability to handle stress and anxiety. It also boosts our immune system and provides energy.

Learning something new helps brain health and memory

When we are learning, our brain is stimulating neurons in the brain. They begin forming new neurological pathways. When there are more pathways, the electrical impulses can act more quickly. More white matter (myelin) in the brain is actually produced. This is called neuroplasticity and is a great way to protect the brain from aging. Learning something new boosts brain health and memory. So, embrace lifelong learning. It will have benefits now….and later.

It’s fun to learn new things

Many of us don’t realize we lose the ability to find fun and joy in life over time. The everyday stresses, responsibilities and schedules weigh us down. We are so busy keeping our day-to-day responsibilities going that we actually forget to have fun…(we moms are particularly susceptible to this). Think about the things which bring joy (or once brought joy) into your life. Try to find a way to carve out time for these interests and hobbies. Finding time to engage in fun activities can actually boost our mindset and energy. Your kids are onto something…go have some fun.

Learning together fosters social relationships

Often we learn new things in a group or class. The act of everyone learning a new thing together fosters not just self-esteem but also a sense of belonging and teamwork. These work together to build our confidence, reduce stress and improve overall mental health.

Find something new to learn today

Think back to childhood and your teenage years. What were your hobbies and interests? Why did you stop doing them? If you are like many of us….life happened. There are so many things which take up our time that we feel like playing and having fun aren’t important….or even worse, are selfish. You will be better able to cope with stress and have the energy to keep up with your responsibilities if you make room for lifelong learning. Start slowly by reading a book, watching a documentary, or just cooking a new meal. Often just getting started will lead to additional interests. You can even learn with a friend or loved one. The act of learning something new together will only make your relationship stronger. So, what are you going to start learning today? Remember, learning something new boosts mental health and wellness.
